Forced daughter to act autistic

Four years in prison is the sentence for the 46 year old father, who according to Malmö district court forced his now 18 year old daughter to act autistic and mentally challenged to acquire the grant money.

He is convicted of serious fraud and serious grant crimes for having signed for assistance allowance and care allowance for nearly 2.4 million Swedish crowns.

The girl has been diagnosed as autistic and mentally challenged. Last fall, when the girl ran away from home and reported her father to the police, it was suspected that she was not as ill as previously thought.

The father has always argued that he is convinced that his daughter really is ill. He received amongst other things child allowance and assistance allowance from Malmö city for nearly seven years. Expert witnesses have stated that a person with the diseases that the girl has been diagnosed with cannot be cured, and especially not undergo such a rapid and total change as she has shown. The district court judges that she simply has not had any of the alleged diseases.

-The sentence is proportionate to the motives that the district court is presenting, that the man has used his daughter who was attached to her father, says Deputy Chief Prosecutor Bo Birgersson.

TT: But why was not the father accused of having subjected his daughter to crime?

- That I cannot answer. The daughter reported her father to the police. An investigation was launched, but it was shut down by other prosecutors. This trial was not really about the daughter, but about the fraud offences that the father is guilty of, says Birgersson.

The girl herself has said that she has done what her father instructed her to do, such as banging her head on the wall, rock her body and not talk to or look at other people.

According to the court, the crimes were so exceptional that the court in its ruling has used the higher part in the range of the sentencing. The court is unanimous in its ruling.

The father and his attorney will appeal.

- My client was very sad and disappointed and will appeal against the ruling, both the issue of being guilty and the sentence issue, says attorney Jan-Anders Hybelius.

Fyra års fängelse blir straffet för den 46-årige pappa som enligt Malmö tingsrätt tvingat sin nu 18-åriga dotter att spela autistisk och utvecklingsstörd för att komma över bidragspengar.

Han döms för grovt bedrägeri och grovt bidragsbrott för att ha kvitterat ut assistansersättning och vårdbidrag för närmare 2,4 miljoner kronor.

Flickan har diagnostiserats som autistisk och utvecklingsstörd. Förra hösten när flickan rymde hemifrån och anmälde sin pappa uppstod misstankar om att hon inte var så sjuk som man tidigare trott.

Pappan har hela tiden hävdat att han är övertygad om att hans dotter verkligen är sjuk. Han fick bland annat vårdnadsbidrag och assistansersättning från Malmö stad i nästan sju år. Expertvittnen har dock förklarat att en person med de sjukdomar som flickan diagnostiserats med inte kan bli frisk, och särskilt inte genomgå en så snabb och total förändring som hon har uppvisat. Tingsrätten bedömer att hon helt enkelt inte har haft någon av de påstådda sjukdomarna.

- Straffet är väl avvägt med de motiv som tingsrätten håller fram, just att mannen utnyttjat sin dotter som var så knuten till sin pappa, säger vice chefsåklagare Bo Birgerson.

TT: Men varför var pappan inte också åtalad för att ha utsatt dottern för brott?

- Det kan jag inte svara på. Dottern polisanmälde pappan. Det startades en förundersökning, men den lades ned av andra åklagare. Den här rättegången handlade egentligen inte om dottern utan om de bedrägeribrott pappan gjort sig skyldig till, säger Birgerson.

Flickan själv har berättat att hon gjort vad pappan instruerat henne att göra, så som att dunka huvudet i väggen, vagga med kroppen och inte prata med eller titta på andra människor.

Enligt domstolen har brotten varit så exceptionella att rätten i sin dom använt den högre delen av straffskalan. Rätten är enig i sin bedömning.

Pappan och hans advokat kommer att överklaga.

- Min klient blev mycket ledsen och besviken och vi kommer att överklaga hela domen, både i skuldfrågan och påföljdsfrågan, säger advokat Jan-Anders Hybelius.

Food, glorious food!

For today’s lesson you are going to add a page to the informational booklet you have made about your chosen country. You are going to find out what “your” country’s national dish is!

You can use either the encyclopedia or the internet to find your information, but if you use the computer make sure your sources are legit!

Instructions:
• The name of the dish will be the title of the page.
• Write down at least five facts about your dish, e.g. what the main ingredient is.
• If you have eaten or tasted the dish, write something about your experience of it. Did you like it or not etc.
• Make a drawing of what you think it looks like on your paper.
• Find a real picture of the dish and put it on your page.
• If you finish before the lesson is over, try to find a recipe of the dish.

When the page is done you put it in your booklet, which we will use to present your work on the school Geography Day.

A Story

It was a dark and stormy night, during which nothing really happened. But it got your attention, didn’t it? The following morning was a beautiful sunny morning, with birds singing in the trees and not a cloud in the sky.

From a quaint little gingerbread house in the woods, a girl emerged. She was dressed in a red cape, with a lovely red hood. Can you guess what her name was? That’s right, her name was Lisa. She was on her way to her grandma who had fallen and hit her head when she was about to hang a clock on the wall. Since then she had constantly been muttering things like “flux capacitor” and “jigowatts”.

Lisa’s mother had packed a basket full of treats for Grandma, such as a big jar of honey (which owing to her mother’s dyslexia was labelled ‘hunny’), some bread wrapped in leaves her mother had bought from a weird pointy-eared fellow, some mushrooms with green hats with white spots on and other assorted goodies.

“Oh, do be careful in the woods, dear!” Lisa’s mother said before she left. “You never know what’s out there!”

“I’ll be back.” Lisa replied, in a strange robotic Austrian accent. She then cleared her throat and said: “Hmm, sorry, don’t know what happened there.”

She left the house and started walking through the woods, all the while singing: “Heigh-ho, heigh-ho, it’s off to Grams I go!” Suddenly she freezes. She hears something coming through the bushes on the side of the path. It was a man dressed in green clothes.

“Hello” he said “I’m Bill O’Malley, the hunter. What are you doing here in the woods all by yourself?”

“I’m going to my grandma with this basket.” Lisa answered. “But I must hurry now, or my mother will worry!”

“Aaaall righty, then!” Bill said, and left the path again. What Lisa didn’t know was that Bill took a quicker way to Grandma’s house, entered it, tied Grandma up and shoved her into a closet. When he saw Lisa coming up to the house he hid behind the door and waited for Lisa to enter. When she did, he jumped out and shouted: “Haha! Now you’re mi-”. He was cut short by a wolf that flew in through the window and landed on Bill.

“We finally caught you Bill O’Malley! No more kidnapping little girls and tying up little grandmas for you!” the wolf said, who was a detective in the Forest PD. As the police escorted their prisoner away, Lisa freed her grandma and made sure she was okay.

A few years later Lisa met the wolf again, and soon they married and had a couple of werewolf children, who had nothing to do with sparkly vampires at all!

ICT is the future! (revised)

Today’s modern society revolves around computers and IT technology. Computers are everywhere, from our cars and our smartphones to the actual computers you have at home. Children growing up today are used to having a computer in the house, and they start using it at a young age. In this essay I will argue for the fact that our schools should embrace the future and take the step into cyberspace.

If we bring ICT into our schools, we will get more tools for aiding children with reading and writing disabilities. The word processing programs on the computers all have built-in spelling aid, which enables the child not only to see directly when they have made an error in their text, but also to get the correct way of spelling it. If you connect a scanner to the computer, the student can scan a text and a program will read it out loud, so that the child can hear the text being read while he or she follows in the text. These are just some examples of helpful tools that can be used.

Furthermore, the ICT tools are not only for the students, but for the teachers as well. If the teachers use computers and IT when they plan and construct their lessons, they have a great opportunity to increase their versatility. It is easier to change and vary the plans depending on which subject you want to use it in. Imagine how you can capture your students with a presentation aided by a slideshow on the smartboard, instead of just the teacher and a whiteboard. With the smartboard you can incorporate visual learning by using pictures relating to your subject. The internet presents a great way of sharing your lessons with other teachers around the world, just imagine the possibilities! And as the saying goes; “There’s no need to invent the wheel twice”.

I would also like to respond to Mr. Norris’ article (16/11), where he states that “the access to the internet is a much too easy trap to fall in”. Sure, there are many distractions on the internet, but it is also a great source of information, provided that you teach the students to watch their sources with a critical eye. I don’t believe that this skill can be taught too early, and it is a skill that will be useful in their working life as well.

So, in conclusion, if we start using ICT in our schools, we can become more efficient at helping both students and teachers. And in doing so we can focus on making the school as interesting and captivating as we can! So, take the step into the future, and into a better tomorrow!

A letter of concern (somewhat revised)

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Johnson!

Your son, Jack, is in the class that I’m teaching. I regrettably have to inform you that recently Jack has been starting to act mischievously in class, and that he has gotten into trouble with the other students as well. I’ve also noticed a drop in his performance in class, meaning he doesn’t do as well on the assignments and in the different subjects, as he used to. He has also gotten into a few fights on the schoolyard.

The reason I’m writing to you is that I’m wondering if you have noticed any difference in Jack’s behaviour at home. Have there been any incidents that may have caused this change in Jack?

Can I ask you to have a talk with Jack, and ask him about it? Maybe you can get some answers? I’ll try to talk with him at school as well, if it is okay with you. I would like for this to be solved as quickly as possible, for both our and Jack’s sake. Perhaps we should arrange a meeting in school, so we can sit down together with Jack and discuss how we can find a solution to this issue.
